AEO vs GEO vs SEO

AEO vs GEO is a naming fight. SEO is still Google ranks. Here is what each term means and how we measure mention and cite inside ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.

aeo vs geo vs seo

Verdict

AEO vs GEO is a naming fight, not two products. Both mean “show up in AI answers.” SEO still means Google blue links. If you only track SEO ranks, you miss whether ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity name you when a buyer asks. We measure the AI-answer half: mention, cite, and who won the response.

What AEO vs GEO vs SEO actually means

AEO is answer engine optimization. You are trying to get mentioned and cited inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and similar products.

GEO is generative engine optimization. Same job, different letters. Profound has argued in public that the work is one job with three names. I agree with the work part. I do not agree that the search queries are the same.

SEO is still “does Google show our URL for this keyword.” That has not been renamed out of existence. AI SEO is the messy one. Sometimes it means AEO. Sometimes it means using AI to write SEO content. We do not sell the second thing.

The industry is so new that a term has not settled. Some teams say AEO. Others say GEO. The models do not care which letters you use. In this short write-up we cover both terms and compare them to SEO so there is no confusion.

What people actually type

We pulled US search demand from DataForSEO in September 2026. These are not our invention. They are the queries we built this cluster around.

US monthly search volume from DataForSEO, September 2026. Market US. Not a rank report.

The volume is not a two-product market. It is a naming vacuum. Most of the demand is “what does this acronym mean,” not “which of these two should I buy.” That is what a practice looks like before the industry picks a word. GEO is the name people type more, and Google already treats “what is geo” as this topic, not maps. AEO is the same job with a smaller footprint. When people spell the work out, generative engine optimization is the query vendors fight over. It is the hardest row in the table. LLM SEO is a third label, and it is smaller still.

The vs queries are the confused minority. Two names make people assume two products. Added together they still do not match a single definition query. If you landed here from geo vs AEO, you are not choosing between methods. You are looking at two labels for the same measurement problem, with SEO still sitting next to them.

How we measure AEO, not Google rank

Measurement units we use in CompeteScan versus classic SEO rank tracking.
CapabilityAEO / GEO (AI visibility)SEO rank tracking
QuestionDoes the answer engine recommend our brand?Does Google show our URL for this keyword?
UnitBrand mention and cite inside an answerURL position on a SERP
Share of voiceHow often you are named versus named rivals across prompts and enginesShare of rankings or clicks across a keyword set
How AI talks about youThe themes in the answer: cheaper, enterprise, outdated, best for XNot a rank metric. A SERP position does not tell you how you are described.
EnginesChatGPT, Gemini, PerplexityGoogle (and sometimes Bing)

FixesOn-site phrasing, comparison pages, offsite mentionsContent, links, technical SEO

You can rank page one on Google and still be missing from a ChatGPT response. Google returns a list of URLs. ChatGPT returns a shortlist of brands it is willing to name. It retrieves a handful of pages, often comparison roundups, review sites, docs, and threads, then compresses them into a recommendation. Your blue-link position is not a vote in that shortlist. If those sources skip you, or if a rival already owns the category in the model’s mix, the answer goes out without you.

Why brand managers still run both

McKinsey’s consumer work on AI search is the reason I stopped treating this as a side project. They put $750B of US buying through AI search by 2028. That is the size of the channel. It is also taking the old one: about 50 percent of Google searches already have AI summaries, a share McKinsey expects to rise to more than 75 percent by 2028. Brands that stay invisible in those answers may lose 20 to 50 percent of traffic from traditional search. This is not a side bet on a large number. It is a channel that is growing while classic search click-through is shrinking.

Keep your SEO suite for keywords and technical health. Run an AI visibility scan on the same domain. Read the losing prompts. Ship the pages SEO will not generate: answer-shaped copy, comparisons, and listings models already cite.

If you want the practical version of “how do I win the answer,” read how to rank in ChatGPT. If you are choosing software, start with how to choose AI visibility tools.
